The Art of Phone Management – Some Tips

Article is written by Dr. P. Ilango

Dr. P. Ilango

Of late, I have been facing the problem of being interrupted almost incessantly by phone calls during my work and study or even leisure. On many occasions (becoming rather too frequent these days), I feel that my mind is losing ‘focus’ and as a result, I am unable to do quality work or give quality time to people who need it the most. This feeling nags me all the time and makes me feel guilty and frustrated.

In this modern hi-tech era, telephones (all types) have become almost a ‘necessary evil’. But, I have learnt certain things over a period of time based on my experiences, both pleasant and unpleasant. I would like to advocate a strategy which I may call as ‘Phone Management’ and this is quite different from what we normally mean by the same terms. While phone management is generally believed to be concerned with the technical aspects of using a telephone as a device more efficiently and to its full potential, I am referring to the aspects relating to how we use the phone, particularly how we handle calls, alerts and text messages.  After all, when we have so much of hype about ‘management’ with so many variations of the concept such as time management, tourism management, stress management, anger management etc, I think we can justify the idea of phone management. I pity my friends who struggle with two or three cell phones or a phone with dual SIM system. I almost get annoyed to see people taking phone calls during meetings and even when they are addressing a gathering which I consider as a lack of etiquette and disrespect to others.

While there is no doubt about the wide range of benefits of telephones, I strongly feel that one needs to have absolute control over it and see that it does not come in the way of work, study or even leisure. These days I see people being controlled by the phone. I myself have felt rather irritated at times when I feel that the phone is gaining control over my life and work. There is no doubt, when you try to control the phone, people may not like it and some may even get annoyed (especially some bosses). When I see someone using a cell phone while driving, I literally shudder to think of the possible consequences. Talking and driving are mutually exclusive because focusing on both the conversation and the road uses the same part of the brain. As a result, people generally become more concerned with their phone conversations and do not concentrate on their immediate surroundings. A 2006 study published in the Human Factors journal showed that drivers talking on cell phones were more involved in rear-end collisions. When talking, people must withdraw their attention from the road in order to formulate responses. Because the brain cannot focus on two sources of input at one time, driving and listening or talking, constantly changing input provided by cell phones distracts the brain and increases the likelihood of accidents. According to studies by the Kaiser Family Foundation, in 1999 only 16 percent of time spent using media such as internet, television, video games, telephones, text-messaging, or e-mail was combined. In 2005, 26 percent of the time this media was used together.

I think we should manage our phones more effectively by switching off while driving or when involved in risky operations. Recently I saw a video of a man triggering off a major fire accident in a Gas Station and getting burnt alive just because he tried to use the mobile phone’s display as a source of light while he was working atop an oil tanker. Besides, I am also of the strong opinion that people should switch off or use silent mode while at work or during meetings in order to avoid distractions and to show respect to others. We need to create awareness about this kind of ‘phone management’ first among school children and youth attending colleges and Universities. We also need to sensitize the public at large regarding the uses and abuses or misuses of phone besides learning etiquette.

An open letter to leaders of Indian Mujahideen

Dear 'reputed leaders' of Indian Mujahideen,

I am K Govindan Nampoothiry, Journalist from Kerala, India.

Recent blast operated by Indian Mujahideen (IM) at Varanasi, the pride of Hindus, lead me to write this mail.

By conducting series of blasts your organisation is testing the patience of Bharat Matha i.e. India. One of your e-mails before Varanasi blast claim that it is against Ayodhya verdict. What a nonsense this is.

Do you think Quran says - Kill people for the better prospect of your community? It's utter foolishness - killing innocent people in the name of holy book of Muslims - Quran. You don't know what Quran is, but continue to serve Pakistan as a slave

Citing Ayodhya verdict as the reason for blast shows  - You don't have common sense. There are thousands of mosques for muslims and Babri Masjid is one among them. Nothing special in that. The case is entirely different for Hindus, as the property is the birth place of Lord Sree Ram. So, who is playing the death card here? As you know, during the reign of Tipu Sultan many hindu temples were destroyed and as a result many Muslim mosques did come. So, why you are claiming right for Ayodhya land. From many solid evidences given by Archeological Society of India it is well clear that it was the land of Lord Sree Ram.

Terrorism is not the final word to save your - Pakistan and idiot Muslim terrorists.

Come forward, say your demands. Otherwise terrorists are - herd of rubbish.

It's high time, that Muslim terrorists claiming every attacks is being done against - Ayodhya verdict. Remember, we are also capable of befitting reply. Tolerance doesn't mean that we are not equipped for remedy. It's the culture of proud Indians.

Indian Mujadheen : In your name itself you keep India. Then why you are killing innocent Indians. One day, your group or your family will pay the price for these violent attacks. So, come forward if you are courageous and demand your needs. Don't take life of kind people....

Satyameva Jayate......

From India bashing to India Shining to India Shaming to…?

By Hema Raghavan

The graph of Indian character during the last couple of months has had an amazing run- from notches down its Y-axis to a spectacular rise above and a steeper fall way below its starting point. The run up to the games was marked by rains, dengue, delay, corruption, dug up roads, dirt and filth strewn all over the city. The foreign press and the Indian media wrote off the CWG citing Indian inefficiency to host a major sporting event. The loathsome pictures flashed on the BBC website and gleefully reprinted by the Indian media were meant to show that India lives only in her toilets. No one questioned whether this filthy reporting was the erstwhile Empire’s way of striking back? For nearly six weeks we ground our noses in muck and filth and looked gleefully at CWG as Corruption Wealth Games played in a Hall of Shame. Passively we accepted the sobriquet ‘corrupt’ for ourselves and painted our shame in all its stains! India bashing had reached incredible proportion.

When we thought we had arrived at the peak of nadir, the Indian Jugaad came into play. The stains disappeared and India preened itself in ceremonial hosting, graduating with honours at the end of an eleven day extravaganza. Our athletes lifted the Indian morale to show that all is not lost in corruption and India shines still. As the Indian flag went up 101 times the graph peaked higher on the Y-axis.

But even before the victory bugle sounded the Last Post, the First Post was heard to mark the start of the investigations. The euphoria of a nation’s sporting success did not last even 24 hours as reports about Games scam to the staggering sum of Rs.8000 crores started coming in. With the graph’s rapid descent into a bottomless pit, India shaming eclipsed India’s momentary hours of shining. Worse was to follow. Adarsh scam showed how the former defence officers were defenceless before greed and graft. But Raja’s broad spectrum of scams put all the rest into shade! Is it possible to retrieve the graph after its hellish descent into the dark vaults of shame?

The famed Indian jugaad now pejoratively stands for Indian ingenuity for corruption. One should be an outright optimist or gifted with self-delusion to affirm that CVC, CAG, CBI put together can erase the odium of Corruption! Let us honestly admit that there is a distinct malaise-an insatiate greed for money- afflicting our society. The vulgar display of riches and the glamorous lifestyle of the ultra rich picturized daily in page 3 of our newspapers and on the TV screens are the sources of vaulting ambition among the middle class to become insta-rich by any means. The media which is aware of its reach and influence presents a picture larger than life, shirking its responsibility to provide its audience a broad sociological, psychological and truthful understanding of all issues. The efforts of our policy makers to liberalize our economy and bring about egalitarian capitalism have not yielded the expected dividend; on the contrary they have ushered in crony capitalism among many of the corporate biggies and infected the middle class to dream big and seek unhealthy satiation through graft and corruption. The politicians have gained the most by their (ab)use of power and clever distribution of largesse to those select few who can return their favours in equal measure. To live and let live is their mantra as the politicians package humanity into politics, but not politics into humanity.

How to regain our honour and dignity in the world polity? Can we turn the graph up on its axis once more? Our only hope rests with the Middle class that has always been the backbone of our society. Gandhiji during the freedom movement mobilized the middle class to sacrifice its dependency on the colonial masters. Today we need a second freedom movement against corruption. The middle class should sacrifice its greed that presently is far greater than its need and build a corruption-free society that values the elegance of a life of simplicity. Can India shaming turn into India Shining ? Only if the Middle class rises and says “Yes, we can”

Dr Valson Thampu, an educational refugee from Kerala speaks

Dr Valson Thampu opens his mind

Dear All,

Read my interview with Dr Valson Thampu, St Stephen's College, New Delhi -

Tribute to Vaidyabhooshanam Raghavan Thirumullpad

Salute to brand ambassador of Ayurveda
With his simple life, simple treatment and one-line answers he amazed me. At this tearful moment I remember his valuable blessings and support.

Role model for 'Simple'.
He showed us what is meant by simplicity

Late Vaidyabhooshanam Raghavan Thirumullpad was known for his simplicity in all areas. His treatments were simple, answers were one-line and the life was more simple. And till his death he hold ethics to his heart. He stopped manufacturing medicines when he felt it is difficult to maintain Dharma in it. And it was actually a message to many reputed Ayurveda institutions in Kerala. Yes, Vaidyabhooshanam Raghavan Thirumullpad was a legend in all terms. But, our media, which celebrates death of celebrities didn't pay much attention. Truly, the loss is for media.

Media and many personalities which utilised him may have forgot to pay respect at the end. Even State & Central Government also.

NextGen Politicians

Mr Shashi Tharoor : Ideal Choice
Inevitable. When we murmur "we hate politics" people forget a fact. Even in that politics is involved! So, politics and political parties are essentinal ingredients of Democracy.
Mr Rajeev Chandrasekhar

But it is high time to draw a guideline for politicians. Should we continue our normal ritual? Electing candidates as per caste, money power, group power etc? Or want a change? Remember, we are living in 'Communication World'. And we need politicians who atleast have the knowledge to send e-mail or sms. So, my talk is all about NextGen Politicians.

Mr Shashi Tharoor and Mr Rajeev Chandrasekhar, are the two candidates, most eligible to call NextGen Politicians according to my view. And the factors favoured for them are - Techsavvy, Practical thinking and representatives of Youth. Atleast they would try to bring development.

Thanks to all ; Will continue frank statements

Dear Friends,

Thanks to all for mail, sms, scraps and calls.

Your support keeps me writing. I know there may be grammar mistake or fault in my postings. But You, which I respect, have supported me always. And has been motivating me to win the race.

So, will continue my 'frank' comments and statements.

My reports or analysis at blogs and other sites hitherto were not biased. Didn't dilute vital points eyeing advertisement or advertiser.

It's for You.

My committment is to Lord Siva & You.

An Editor's Gimmicks

An 'Independent Editor', who is specialised in bluffing and applying cheap tricks, is now acting like Pope John Paul II. Will reveal more about this guy soon.

Considering professional & personal ethics I never mentioned the name of 'Independent Editor' or the firms which he is being associated. But he is challenging me by handling things in 'Professional Way'. May God bless him! Om Namasivaya.

If I'm publishing his recent mail starting - As you are aware.....I'm afraid to write what will be the reaction from Ayurveda Community and Well Wishers, even from our Lord Siva.

Do dharma, he often speaks. He has rich knowledge about Sri Bhagavat Geetha, Srimad Mahabhagavatham etc. Even though 'Independent Editor' belongs to Christian community, he is keen in reading puranas, vedas and books related to our heritage. Irony here is, this man, in practial life follows adharma! At the zenith of extreme he even blames his subordinates for his dereliction!

Kerala under Terror

Dear Friends,

We are living in a society where terror reigns. Latest reports show that Kerala is the fertile land for terrorists. Numerous camps were held in Kerala by anti-social elements to plan their operation. However, no media which 'breaks' latest news couldn't show any evidence of that.

Here I am giving you exculsive photographs on Terrorist camp in Perumbavoor at Ernakulam. So, I request all of you to visit my blog - http://govindannampoothiry.blogspot.com, to watch exculsive photographs on Terrorist camp in Perumbavoor at Ernakulam.

'Real' life : Veteran actor Shantadevi in direstraits

Dear Friends,

Painful story of veteran actor Srimati Shantadevi. The article was written by Dr Venugopal of MIMS, Kozhikode. Dr Venugopal and TA Razzaq, scriptwriter, took intitative to help this veteran actor when she deserved. Try to respect and honour people who serves society without raising slogans and demonstrations.

To read the story visit - http://www.scribd.com/doc/36204745/Real-life-Veteran-actor-Shantadevi-in-direstraits

Hope this incident will enlighten and an eyeopener for the 'busy' office bearers in Malayalam Film Industry. And it is shameful that an actor who has lived as 'mother' of present superstars encountered this situation.

Nonsense Reporting from Kerala Media

The recent reports which was published at The New Indian Express and Indiavision and moreover the hero of the month 'created' by regional media - Abdul Nasser Madani, lead me to write a few words about Kerala Media.

Abdul Nasser Madhani
It was quiet embarassing. All media tried to spread the seeds of violence in public by telecasting and publishing that activists of PDP are ready for anytype of protest during the arrest of Madhani. The irony here is Madhani, who is accused in Bangalore bomb blast was spreading the message of peace and media in a hurry to speed up their ratings spurred the moments of tension in Anwarssery. Even leading media houses tried to maintain the momentum well.

Remember, two kids of Madhani and Sufiya are watching this. These kind of 'coverage' by media to Madhani and Sufiya will hurt their small minds. Forever, media, will be a nightmare for these kids.

Humble request to Media, especially Kerala - Don't spoil the life of children of Madani & Soofiya. Let allow them to live peacefully. They are also human beings.

Indiavision - Desperate attempt
Mr Nikesh Kumar, noted journalist, was instrumental in bringing 'Live News' culture to Malayalis. He succeded in that.
Hats off to him.

After the exit of Mr Nikesh Kumar, noted journalist, Indiavision (leading Malayalam news channel) has been making desperate attempts to hog the limelight by reporting low quality publicity news.

The perfect example of no (n) sense reporting was - Followers of K Muraleedharan (Son of veteran congress leader K Karunakaran) calling or praising Mr Muraleedharan as 'Leader'. What to say about this.

We have experienced or enjoyed the performance of Mr Murali well as KPCC president, Minister etc. Frnakly he has proved he fits well in Politics. Because to survive the battle you have to be in two boats!!!

The New Indian Express
This leading newspaper dated on August 18th, 2010, reports two died in Bangalore bomb blasts. However, people who have seriously read newspapers may find this fact is not at all true.

Why media deliberately manipulates the death toll?

I was at Bangalore when series of bomb blast occured at 2008. The tension created by regional media was beyond words. Fortunately, mintues before blast, I visited all the places where bomb blast occurred!
